The Value of Server Warranties: A Lesson from the Field

The peace of mind and protection that warranties offer far outweigh the risks and expenses of operating without one.

Are your on-prem servers under warranty?

For businesses relying on on-premise servers, an active manufacturer’s warranty is more than just a safety net—it’s a vital investment in business continuity. We always recommend extending server warranties for up to 7 years, which aligns with the typical lifespan of most servers.

I recall an experience from several years ago when a customer’s mission-critical server suffered a motherboard failure. Unfortunately, the server was out of warranty. While we managed to locate replacement parts, they were two days away—time the customer couldn’t afford to lose. Determined to resolve the issue quickly, we found a donor server on eBay, got up at 4 a.m., drove a round trip of 4 hours to collect it and return to the customers site, replacing the motherboard just as staff were arriving for work.

We were lucky to have found a replacement system and the experience could have been completely avoided had the server had been under warranty. The incident highlights why we emphasise the importance of warranty extensions. The peace of mind and protection they offer far outweigh the risks and expenses of operating without one.

A small investment in a warranty today can save significant time, money, and headaches in the future.
