I recall an experience from several years ago when a customer’s mission-critical server suffered a motherboard failure. Unfortunately, the server was out of warranty. While we managed to locate replacement parts, they were two days away—time the customer couldn’t afford to lose. Determined to resolve the issue quickly, we found a donor server on eBay, got up at 4 a.m., drove a round trip of 4 hours to collect it and return to the customers site, replacing the motherboard just as staff were arriving for work.
We were lucky to have found a replacement system and the experience could have been completely avoided had the server had been under warranty.
